What does marketing mean (really)?

Think about how often you’ve heard things like:

That company should ramp up its marketing!

or the opposite:

It’s just a marketing gimmick!

Well, such comments reveal a widespread confusion, mistaking marketing for mere advertising, sales, or, worse, a scam.

Let’s set the record straight: marketing is a transfer of value. More precisely, it’s the process through which companies connect what they create with those who seek its benefits.

But what is this “value” we speak of? It is the value between who makes the product and who uses it. It is the essence of solution and satisfaction — solving a problem, gratification, pleasure, fulfillment, money.

And even if this seems to reduce everything to a simple transaction (after all, the word marketing comes from “market”), here is the crucial condition: that both who gives and who receives are happy. At its core, marketing thrives on mutual satisfaction, ensuring that both the creator and the consumer emerge from the exchange enriched and content.

Otherwise, marketing is poorly done.

Or, more simply, it has nothing to do with it.
